The Long Way Round  19th Feb '06 6:07 PM

For anyone who's interested in the more remote parts of Russia and surrounding countries, I can highly recommend The Long Way Round DVD.

The actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman decided to ride round the world on their motorbikes. Most of their journey takes place in the former USSR including Ukraine, Russia (esp Siberia and the Road of Bones), Kazakstan and Mongolia. They got to meet plenty of fascinating people on the way, from mafia types and street kids to rural workers and shepherds. Plus some amazing scenery. A fascinating overview of these countries.

Please bring that with you when you come! I really want to see how they crossed that river, the only part of the book where Ewan and Charlie weren't crying and being miserable so-and-sos!! The description was fantastic, almost made me want to go out, buy an Ural and head East in a straight line.

Russian trucks rule. Ever seen the Kamaz that does the Dakar rally? Mental! Grrr!!!

Yep, and I better get the bleedin' renovation finished here or you'll run screaming at first sight of the place!

Also *might* have found an orphanage interested in volunteer teacher/s. *Might*.

Can't wait to see DVD! Maybe I better buy a player...

I agree. I managed to get my dirty little hands on a copy and it is a fantastic show. The scenery is just amazing and it's interesting that they managed to show so much about the local cultures. I'd highly recommend it to anyone, especially if you are interested in heading of the beaten track.
