New feature - resources directory 14th Aug '08 10:45 AM
No, not a links directory, but an online directory of offline resources.
I've been thinking about it for a while, and the Chuckling Dog formerly known as The Bearded Parrot also brought up the idea recently. It's been a while since I did anything innovative on VR (you've got to admit that having the only, or at least the first, EFL school directory with maps is pretty damn cool).
The idea is similar to the school directory, but will include things other than schools. For example, places to go for HIV tests, visa invitations, cheap digs, beer, etc. etc.
Not wanting to give too much away, but it would use Google Maps to show locations (a full-screen map of the city with categories of resources that can be toggled on and off).
It could also show school locations on a single page (those whose exact latitude and longitude are in the database) which would be useful for the whole deciding-where-to-live-and-work issue.
At the moment I'm thinking of having a submission form that would let our beloved users mark locations on the map (just like on Google's own Maps site) and submit resources, thus we could build up a fairly extensive directory of useful stuff for teachers (if anyone can be arsed to actually use it).
Any ideas for categories of useful resources?
I'm thinking:
Schools
HIV test places
Visa agencies
Hostels
Homestays
Bus stations (for visa runs)
Entertainment (cheap beer, etc.)
Cultural stuff (not that teachers are likely to care, but who knows...) ___________________________________________________ bobs12 is in a huff
