Fun spots to hit in Moscow?  28th Apr '08 2:26 AM

Hello,

I wholly plan on teaching in Russia in about 4 months if I have my way. (On an off note, I will have it. *Laughs*) and I was wondering what would be some neat places to check out before I get posted to a school.

I know there are some places like the Kremlin, but I am woefully uneducated in Russian attractions. Also if the school won't let me move into accommodations early. What would be a neat place to stay. Hostel or Hotel?

Anyways, thanks for your advice!

A habitable hotel in Moscow will break the bank for most people, an affordable one will just break

If the school isn't providing accommodation, try starting off by looking up hospitalityclub.org, couchsurfing.com and flatmates.ru (try to keep away from axe murderers) and aim to find a room for rent, or a separate apartment.

As a lot of folks are aware how much I loathe and detest Moscow, I won't drone on about the evils of the Big Smelly Village, but I can only really recommend a cracking place to go for a meal - it's Сварня at metro Bratislavskaya. They have very good food and humongous portions.

Other than that, I'm too anti-Moscow to be able to really say where's worth going. The centre is fairly interesting, Ljubljanka, Bolshoi Theatre, etc, but other than that, I'm stumped!

your fun spot is probably my nightmare 23rd May '08 9:33 AM

Another naive and innocent victim falls prey to the myths and promises of greener grass.

I love Moscow and lived there for a couple of years before moving on to discover real Russia in the hinterlands.

Any google search will provide more information than you can assimilate.

Try www.expat.ru for the weirdly extreme and cynical or visit www.themoscowtimes.ru

Both have advice sections as well as job adverts and accomodation possibilities.

Otherwise take a look at www.unclepasha.(com or ru, can't remember) or www.russiagirlfriday.com

"The mere mechanical technique of acting can be taught, but the spirit that is to give life to lifeless forms must be born in a man. No dramatic college can teach its pupils to think or to feel. It is Nature who makes our artists for us, though it may be Art who taught them their right mode of expression."
