Calculating income from teaching  23rd Mar '08 4:18 PM

Hi all.

http://www.visarus.co.uk/vr_income_calculator.xls is a simple spreadsheet that will help you to work out your potential income, expenses and working time as a teacher.

It should help to give an idea of how much you need to work to get by, and how much you can realistically earn depending on different hourly rates.

Basic guide to using the spreadsheet:

The lilac-coloured fields are for entering data.

Pale yellow fields provide breakdowns of figures.

Rich yellow fields give final figures.

One way to use it is to give yourself a workload target. Start by entering your expenses, then adjusting the number of lessons, hourly rates and travelling time to balance them out.

Then add more work to give yourself a positive margin (I'd aim for at least 10 to 15k roubles).

You can enter traveling time as an average per lesson (thus you can account for teaching from home) as well as preparation time.

I've entered some 'default figures':

2 hours travelling time per lesson - the SPb average return trip to a lesson is about 2 hours. Note that this assumes 'returning to base' between lessons - in reality you should be able to travel direct from lesson to lesson and cut this figure down if you have a well-filled schedule.

0.5 hours preparation time - this depends on how much time you actually need

50 roubles travelling expense per lesson - this is a slight overestimate

Visa costs might actually be slightly underestimated - they assume 1000 euros for a work visa invite, about 430 euros for the visa run and 150 euros for processing. Adjust as appropriate.

Rent, food, etc. obviously depend on where you get a flat and how much you spend.

Expenses don't include materials.

'Split' is the extra time between lessons, on top of travelling.

Cancel is the percentage of cancelled/missed lessons. 20% is a good, safe, figure for one-to-one lessons, 5% for groups.

Working day hours is the average time you spend working per day from start to finish.

Corrected real hourly rate is based on your average working day and average daily earnings.

The figures are more accurate at higher numbers of lessons. Note that it gives only a rough guide and you need to think a bit about the actual input figures (e.g. where times will overlap - for example travel and preparation time can overlap) to get a more accurate picture.

I'm not an Excel genius, so there are other minor faults with the logic of some calculations, but overall I think it gives a good basis to get a picture of what your earnings will look like.

Yes, thanks Bob.
I also have my own variant in Excel, but it is a combined timetable and income calculator. It's really just to remind me of what I am supposed to be doing and see how much the shcools vary their calculations by each month
I don't calculate 'real hourly income' over the whole period, including down time. If I have time between lessons, it's my own and I don't see that anyone should pay me for it. I'm happy just to do the job and see the cash at the end of the month and, yes, your sheet came to pretty much the average sum when I put in the average teaching amounts. It works.
