Seb's 102 questions about working in russia - dare to enter?  8th Jan '08 1:42 AM

Hi guys,
here it goes

1) I was born in Italy from an italian father and an english mother so I'm not a native speaker but my level of english is good enough for me to be able to teach it. That hasn't been a problem over here in Viet Nam where I'm teaching at the moment.... Do you think I will have difficulties in finding a job in S.Petersburg?

2) I was planning to come over in March, will there be jobs available during that period?

3) I'm looking for some kind of cheap accomodation, what's the best option? I was thinking of either sharing an apartment with some russian people (I've been looking at www.flatmates.ru) or homestay

I'm coming over to Russia to improve my russian (which is really basic at the moment) so I'm not really concerned about making lots of money.
Thanks for helping guys!

Seb

1) All about how you sell yourself to the schools.

2) My crystal ball says.... probably

3) Flatmates.ru is good for finding weirdoes and axe murderers =) No, only kidding, I know there have been some pretty good flats on that site in the past. Also try hospitalityclub.org oe couchsurfing for a place to crash when you first arrive.

If money's not a big concern I assume you can afford to stay a week or two to find a place to stay? Do us a favour and don't take any badly-paid jobs when you get here, and don't work for the Benedict school unless you have no option

You might find the TEFL Guide to Russia helpful, both morally and practically (shameless plug) - just note that the information in it about business visas is now out of date - check the forum for info on that.

Nothing new about visas has filtered down to us thus far, so the best thing is to use the school directory, contact schools and ask them what they are doing about visas. If you plan to stay longer than 6 months, try to find a school that will arrange a work or student visa for you.
