 Best Tefl book(s)??  14th Oct '07 3:32 PM

I was wondering which book(s) you would advise reading to get some credible knowledge on Tefl ?

I know there are a good few books out there but which do I go for?

Jeremy Harmer, Practice of English Teaching - the Bible of EFL teaching! Cuts through all the nonsense bulldust that tries to make EFL look difficult in order to justify the cost of CELTAs and sundry other expensive certificates.

Murphy's English Grammar (blue book) - has brilliantly clear explanations of grammar that work very well for classroom teaching, coupled with very clear and constructive exercises. There are also elementary and advanced books (the blue one is the intermediate one, but contains material suitable for advanced elementary through to upper-intermediate).

I'll give Harmer try then, looks like he's on the fourth addition now with that book and it comes with a dvd with some sample lessons which would be of use to me.

I've got Murphy's book already and it does seem like it could come in very handy in the classroom.

Martin, (and anybody else who may be interested)

If you don't want to spend out too much on swotting up, then have a look here:

w*w.englishtips.org (replace *).

You have to do a free registration to be able to download - but won't get loads of junk mail thereafter...

You can download LOADS of teaching and other books, film, and audio - and it won't cost you a penny...... All totally illegal..... and Russian (of course
