 Hullo!  23rd Sep '07 10:00 PM

Hi all!

Um, I've just been pointed in the direction of this forum, so I thought I'd come by and say hello. =] I came across this site when I was Googling 'teaching in Siberia', and it looks like you guys are all really knowledgeable and helpful, so I signed up! If anyone does know much about getting a teaching post in Siberia, I'd be really glad if you could fill me in!!

~ Em

Rush on teaching posts in Siberia?? 24th Sep '07 11:43 AM

Hiya!

Unfortunately, getting any info out of anyone on this site usually involves sending them PMs - but there have been a fair few peeps in Siberian schools, and there are a few reviews of schools in the directory (now with a map so you can just click on cities in the rough geographical area you're interested in!)

Those reviews contain some pretty useful info. Also would be a good idea just to call (not email) round schools in the directory to see if they have jobs.

Best of luck! And see if you can drag some of our Siberian friends back to the forum to answer your questions there are a few other people looking for the same info!

PS - on the subject of 'user level' tags - they were originally supposed to change depending on the number of posts you make. I was just too lazy to make that happen, but I can change it to something more interesting on request

You beat me to it Bob 24th Sep '07 10:17 PM

I was going to reply yesterday but couldn't, anyway Bob fixed that for me and now here I am. Even though it isn't Siberia I emailed Bob the other day about info on Chelyabinsk.

It seems as though Places to far out of St Petes and Moscow are to far off the beaten track and don't get reported on. I myself would appreciate it if some info could come through from members who have taught from the Urals and east of them as well.

I have just thought, maybe a forum section for Urals/Siberia like there is a section each for Moscow and St Petes. It may help to get others to post information about their travels and places they have worked. This may be a way to assist in gathering info that could be used in the schools list etc.

I'm looking for the same info, as in my off the beaten track post. Mostly to do with working hours, holidays and stuff like that. Want to have some time of work to learn the language, etc. Can't seem to find much of this info in the reviews but i'll keep looking. How do people get to siberia btw? I'm in south korea at the moment. I've only been able to find pretty expensive flights so I'm thinking maybe ferry to China or Vladivostok and train from there?

Hi!

I, like most, have no experience of this region - being safely esconced in St-Petersburg.

However, our very nice friends at the British Council in Russia, who, although now no longer offering any teaching in Russia (heh! Heh!), do have an office in Ekaterinberg. This is no more than a gnat's c*ck away from Chelyabinsk, and they might be able to give you some general info on the best way to get there and perhaps a few other tips. Although it is against their 'official policy" - they might also be able to give you names of some schools in the region and you can take it from there...

They can also be contacted at ekaterinburg(a)britishcouncil.ru

Service - It's what us Brits pay our taxes for!!! (when we live in Britain )

Have fun!!

That's a very good point. In fact:

I think is not necessarily the case - I once wrote round BCs asking if they could put me in touch with schools in their areas when I was first putting the school directory together - some of them were very forthcoming with info.

Give it a try

Which was exactly what I was saying, Bobs12. If your enquiry is answered by a 'jobsworth', who has only been working in the office for 5 minutes, you may get the official "we don't give out details/recommend any schools" line.

However, even this attitude may be overcome by sounding 'desperate' and 'soooooooo gratefu'l for any help....along with being 'very friendly'. Most BC information centres will generally come up with something if pushed, and sometimes with no pushing required at all....

Heh heh.

Or "Finding as many ways as possible to justify our pointless existence..."

I didn't say that, though

ROBERT!! How COULD you?!!?

The approximately 200,000 UK pounds that the BC receive annually (via the FCO) from government funds is money extremely well spent, in my opinion.

F'rexample - Where else in Russia could a dirty, smelly unkempt vagrant, such as myself, be able to find warmth, a cheery smile, some almost-up-to-date English newspapers AND somewhere for a quiet kip?

Jus' like being in the UK really.....

I need to add new smilies to the forum - imagine a small yellow animated character rolling around on the floor laughing hysterically

Yep, I reckon that money would be better spent on renovating British expats' apartments and buying them decent clothes, razors, soap, etc. - a much better way to improve the general impression of the British Empire... er, sorry, Isles, overseas

To Emilie-Yerby

Well you started this thread and said you would be "be really glad if you could fill me in"

It seems to me that some people have subsequently taken the time and trouble to try to be of help to you - and thus would pose the question: .... Just where the h*ll are you now?"

If we don't hear from you again soon, then perhaps the 'filling in' might be rather alternative to that which was requested - virtually speaking of course..

Yet again I almost hate myself for posting this.... But it had to be said...Have you lost the URL or what???

Regards
