Introducing ....ME! ....any girls out there?  16th May '07 11:23 AM

Hey guys, I was told I should introduce myself so drum roll please! ......

I'm 5"8 brunette with blue eyes...hmmm maybe not the right site for that sort of intro.

Anywho I'm Irish, 23, and I've done a years teaching in Korea already. Been back in Dublin now for about 6 months and going a little stir crazy, wanna go see a few more places. Always wanted to go to Russia, and likeing the lack of contracts, I don't like letting people down by breaking promises/comtracts etc and I don't like being required to stay a year somewhere. So its looking appealing.

I suppose I enjoyed Korea,I was one of the drunken fools that I saw someone else complaining about. I like to go out with my friends dancing etc and I made some great friends, but generally no Korean friends. I did in fact end up in the middle of a lawsuit between the only two girls I thought were my friends, and I had issues with my school over pay pretty much every month. Aside from that though I loved the work, and I miss my kids sooooooooo much! They were great!

So anyway I've been leafing through the website here and reading bits and bobs, and I've one main thing I wanna ask.

So..Most of you seem happy your there, which is great, BUT your all guys or seem to be, so I'm wondering if you by anychance all have Russian girlfriends? I'm not asking you this because I fancy you or anything, but because I realised about a week after I got to Korea, that all the white guys loved it there. Yes they maybe hated the food, or climate or certain really mindnumbing cultural things, but they were all happy, cause every weekend they went out they got a new absolutely stunning girl falling at their feet, and the sex made up for everything wrong with the country!

I'm not a prude or anything like it, but thats not going to be my reason for staying in a country, so I wanna know, if its the case in Russia too?

I've heard a few of you complain about the money and working all the hours god sends, but that you still like it, and then I've heard mentions of girlfriends too, so I wanna check if its the same deal as Korea.

I also heard a bit about racism from variuos places, I'm white so it sholdn't affect me, (selfish but true), so wanna check in general is Sexism a problem?

 Hi Countess 17th May '07 3:05 AM

I think there is one person here that you can contact, Anna (Digdug) She has worked in Oktyabrsyk and Kazan over the last year. Last I heard she was back in England to go to school. She might be able to fill you in on the 'Friends' topic. I do know that she got along great with the other (girl) teachers at the school. They are all Russian. Anna's Russian was pretty good and she made her way around town pretty well. I would know about any boyfriend stuff though. She could also fill you in on possible school job opennings.

Hope that helps.

Was that an accidental reference to yours truly?

Answers to some questions - yes, most guys here have Russian girlfriends, but I wouldn't say that's everyone's prime objective here. I'd be pretty happy to have a non-Russian girlfriend, but the choice is pretty limited and the long-term prospects are pretty much nil.

Sexism isn't a huge problem - at least not in teaching - as Will said, contact DigDug - even better, ask her to join in the thread, it's been ages since we saw her on the forum!

White people aren't generally prime targets for random/racist violence, wouldn't sweat too much over that.

Making friends is easy enough here - although with Russians the cultural barriers can be surprisingly high. You'll find people often have alter egos - one for English, the other for Russian. The Russian one can be pretty heavy going at times...

Oh yes, welcome to the site (again)! Hope you'll find it useful and I look forward to seeing more of you (no sexist pun-like reference to your intro intended )

 I'm back! 18th May '07 2:08 PM

Digdug has just got back from Kazan so hopefully she might be able to pop onto the site a bit more now... it's nice to feel missed, anyway!

My good news is I've won quite a hefty scholarship to do an MRes in Russian Studies at UCL. It means I'll be stuck in England for the next 2 years, but hopefully I'll be able to return to Russia in the summer breaks, esp when I need to research my dissertation.

I certainly never had any problem with sexism in Russia. The society is certainly more traditional but sexism never cropped up as an issue. If anything the predominance of men in EFL makes people more impressed that you've travelled to Russia, and it's nice to have some women just for a bit of balance. Education is an almost entirely female profession in Russia anyway, it's only in EFL where the men dominate. So basically noone will bat an eyelid that you're a woman.

Oh, and I should add that most of the EFL teachers I've met in Russia weren't girlfriend/sex hunters. Some of them happened to meet partners while living in Russia, but just in the normal way that you'd meet someone in your home country. For the most part teachers aren't on the pull.

Going out on the pull in Russia ain't a good idea anyway - you might pick up more than just a quick shag

Internet connection ran out before I could add, "congratulations Anna!" Fat wedge of cash to be spent as you please, is it?

I have met guys from various places who were/are here for women.

Most, if they've been here long enough to date one, know it's a bad idea. LOL
I ended up with mine before I came here.

As for girlfriends (as a friend), I find that making friends here is pretty easy.

There are a lot of expat women here...I meet them occasionally when I'm out (which is rare). I'm told that there are a lot more in places that I don't go.

Personally, and maybe out of place, I don't suggest Russia for dating. I would suggest it as a cultural experience and a very interesting place to live--even for a short time.

Aye - girls here often don't have a hell of a lot of fun on the dating front (I don't think you were originally asking that question, but just in case) - I know for a lot of people who go to work abroad it's generally important to live life 'as normal', which for many involves a relationship of some sort.

Expat girls generally complain as much about Russian guys as expat guys do about Russian girls.

Relationships between expats are pretty rare here - and from what I've seen over the last few years, usually pretty turbulent and short-lived!

 Defining 'hefty' 20th May '07 3:43 PM

If only Bobs! When I said 'hefty scholarship', I meant it'll just about cover the 'even heftier living expenses' of living in London. But it's nice to have the opportunity to be able to study something you love, and get funded through it ))
