Viewing topic: Reply notification / post notification

Hopefully I can get everyone's ideas on this.

The whole forum is quite spread out through lots of subforums. As it gets more users it will be harder to keep track of replies in conversations, or new posts in areas that interest you.

Would you like something along the lines of the following:

a) A private message/email to say that someone has replied to a topic you posted

b) Notification that someone has added a post to a thread you have also posted in

c) Notification of any new threads (topics) in forums that you're interested in

Everything would be controlled by a simple page that would allow you to stop watching forums/threads etc. in case there were too many emails, or just to switch the whole thing off

Ideas?

I don't use these notification thingys to be honest... I've used them on other forums and generally I get fed up of my inbox being clogged full of 'So-and-so has replied to your post', and turn 'em off.

Just my personal preference though, so long as it's 'turn off-able' to quote that plastecine tortoise!

I'm thinking about a notification system that only tells you when you log in - the same way you see if you have a pm when you log in. Something would pop up beside the link to the forum and tell you if you have any replies.

Any thoughts, or are you all fairly happy? I just think that when there are lots of posts, it might get tedious to trawl through everything to see if you've had a reply. But if you guys are happy, I'm happy too!

But this idea of them being in the forum when you log in is cool.

it's easy for us to check when there are responses anyway. we just look at the bottom of the thread.
