Just my opinion 30th Jan '06 10:25 PM

Personally speaking, Russian in English phonetics is one of my bugbears. And I end up getting totally confused, cos I forget whether I'm supposed to be reading the letter 'p' as a p or an r sound, same with y, x etc.

Not meaning to have a go at you Horseman, different strokes for different folks and all that. But I remember that it only took me a few hours of practice to learn the Russian alphabet - it's easier than most people assume! (Unlike Russian grammar...)

I am sure it is darlin,,, but I am an Okie,,, we have a hard enough time with english. I am sure that if I turned on our local grammer you won't understand a word. But it is english, and spanish, and german, and on and on and ..... Well I think it is great that you have learned the Russian alphabet, but there is no way I can....

 Offer you can't refuse 31st Jan '06 8:27 AM

Seriously, if you want to give it a bash I can send you some photocopies from one of my textbooks with exercises to guide you in gently. First you learn the letters that are the same as English (a, c (when pronounced s like ceiling), k, m, o, t etc). Then you learn the ones that look or sound similar (d, e, l, y, H etc). That leaves actually not very many - the totally different ones like zh, ts.) I swear it only takes a few hours.

You confuse me with Oake and I'll baffle you with Derbyshire, a ya arkin' mi, mi duck?

 Alphabet learning 31st Jan '06 6:02 PM

I think that's really the biggest hurdle a lot of people have with Russian and other languages with odd alphabets - really, a few hours and some concentreation and it should go in.

I'm not saying you haven't tried though, I admit I would be a bit annoyed if somebody told me the Mandarin alphabet (or is it Cantonese?) is a scoosh to pick up.

Go on from the basic letters to reading familiar signs (there's a university site with a fantastic collection of pictures of easy-to-read street signs) and words and you're on your way to opening a whole new can of worms!

 Thanks 31st Jan '06 10:41 PM

Thanks Guys
I might have to try that. When Luda (My girlfriend) gets here I plan to learn as much as I can. I have met a few Russian women that married American men that would not even try to learn Russian. I don't think that's fair. I think if you expect someone to learn your language you should at least try theirs. My ex-wife was German. I begged her to teach me. I know a little, but I wanted to know what her father was saying behind my back. !7 years and she never did.

She promised to teach my son and still hasn't... he knows some Russian now because of me.... Someday I will thry the alphabet..... I promise.

 Transliteration 10th Feb '06 3:16 PM

Hello!

I think in transliteration it is better when в is v, not w, like:

With you - с вами - s vami (svA-mi)

Some might find it easier to know where stress goes in a word or in expressions. Maybe we should make mp3s on VisaRus and teach Russian to teachers!

 Cool Idea 11th Feb '06 3:12 AM

Thanks Tatiana

I think the MP3 idea is cool. I would get into that. Thanks for the input on V instead of W. I still make corrections as I go along. If I could just get good enough to talk on the phone I would be happy.
