 Selective dishonesty  28th Apr '06 4:34 PM

-So how do people feel about telling lies to get jobs. You know things like must have_experience worling with children. Or experience in business. Or familiarity with unarmed combat. Or whatever the job description wants.
-Now obvious I'm not suggesting you say "Of course I know how to blow glass" but in a ESl job description, something as vague as "1 year experience working with children required'it would seem like almost any person with young siblings could in fact argue he has said experience.
-So according to business ethics a la russe, what is the most 'selectively optimisitc' way you have described yourself for a job?

 I always tell lies :) 28th Apr '06 5:51 PM

My favourite one is telling people I'm an English teacher )

When I started out in Russia I was a little economical with the truth about the kinds of classes I'd taught - it was 'survival English', i.e. learning to cope with particular lignuistic situations fairly unique to the city I was living in.

I stretched this just a tad into 'bespoke situational language training courses'

Working with Kids 30th Apr '06 7:15 AM

Just cut to the quick and tell them you have children of your own. LOL... In fact I home schooled my son for the last half of his second year.

I have worked a little with the kids here in Oktyabrsky. Most of the work with Kids seems to just be asking simple questions and small talk. Nothing to it. So tell them that you have spoken to children beforre and that qualifies you as an expert. LOL

But try to stick with an older class of students. The kids are fun to work with , but how many times can you ask them if they have a dog?
Take care Pink

Still looking for a snake Rob. Talk to you later.

"how many times can you ask them if they have a dog?"

That's why I don't teach kids on a regular basis I just don't have the patience or the imagination! That's another lie I often tell - if a school asks 'have you worked with kids', I reply 'no'... )

Actually, I'm pretty honest about everything...but then that may be a lie.

Sure, I can teach kids...but I have worked with adults more and prefer to work with them (or whatever it is your going for, but not an all out lie).
[Note: I have worked with kids (under 1 and usually work with adults--as I'm more trained uni students.]
