Forum Alerts Revisited  26th Apr '06 11:32 AM

I think I've finally got my head round the forum alerts - with the size of the new site and the number of forums it's going to be a bit of a necessity!

The forum alerts module is not email-based - it just gives you a message when you log in and tells you how many topics you're involved in (where you posted or replied) have had further replies.

If anyone seriously wants email alerts, PM me and I'll see what I can do about setting it up as an option. Personally I hate getting emails from these things.

For the moment, while I'm testing, there will be no option not to have alerts. Sorry But once it's all working properly (if it ever does) I'll let you all choose to switch it off. By default it will be turned on.

 I think it's working... 26th Apr '06 3:22 PM

Okay folks, pretty soon if you use the forum on http://esl.visarus.co.uk (the changes won't be made on www.visarus.co.uk for quite a while) you'll find there's a simple system of tracking forum threads.

When you view the forum index, any forums containing discussions you're involved in that have received replies since you last viewed them will be marked by a *red* folder instead of the usual brown one.

This will only start to work with topics or replies that you post from now onwards, i.e. old topics & posts aren't part of the system.

Sounds complicated but it's really simple, and should help to keep track of your conversations in multiple forums.

If you're in different forums at once, say, Poland, Brazil and Mexico, there will shortly be a new 'Forum watch' page where you will be able to access links to all active discussions simultaneously.

Forum alerts will stay active for 20 days or until you read the topic. The option to delete them or turn them off completely will be provided shortly.

If any of this is confusing, feel free to reply here or PM me. It's been a long day at work and I'm sure my brains are pretty fried
