What does ESL stand for?

ESL stands for 'English as a Second Language'.

It used to be EFL - English as a Foreign Language was the term for teaching English in foreign countries.

ESL used to be reserved for teaching English to incomers in countries where English was the native language.

Now they're used interchangeably. ESL is more 'trendy', and I have to start filling the site with references to it so that search engines pick it up
