 Inappropriate / outdated phrases  10th Apr '06 9:43 AM

Some English phrases commonly misused or overused by Russians:

'Don't mention it' (in response to 'thank you')
'Not at all' - as above
'For nothing' / Not for nothing - as above

'As for me' - (что касается меня) used in the beginning of any statement referring to the speaker. This sounds terrible!

'And what about me' - as above, also sounds terrible

'If I'm not mistaken' - just overused. We reserve it for 'special' situations in English whereas Russians throw it in all over the place.

'Sorry for late' - doesn't make sense, say: sorry I'm late instead.

'I feel myself well/bad' - I feel well/bad

I'll keep the list updated as more come to mind

Just say 'I' - leave out those phrases altogether
